George Radion in Australia has a database on Australian-made Jacks

This database is for vintage and classic Epco vehicle jacks.  Many of the photos and comments have been gleaned from Ebay and other sites.  I would be pleased to add photos and comments from anyone who has information on these jacks.

Please note that this information is accurate to the best of my knowledge, but I make no claims about authority on this subject. Use your own discretion when evaluating the accuracy of the information.

Many Epco jacks are now very old.  I would recommend that they are now used only for display purposes.  If one is used for lifting a vehicle, the operator should never put them self underneath the supported area without additional load bearing equipment in place, such as block of wood. Never use bricks for this purpose.

New seals are available for these jacks. Please see the link on the home page.

The values are normally taken from auction sites world-wide, but exclude postage.

Request to vendors: Please feel free to use the information from these databases in your adverts. An acknowledgement of the source would be most welcome. However, please do not twist any of the information. Where I say along the lines: 'May be for car X' please make this clear in your advert. An altered statement saying: 'It is for car X' will create false facts and misinformation. If you know for certainty a jack's heritage please contact me so that I can amend the entry. Thank you.

General Notes on Epco Jacks

Epco used numbering across all the range 55 /60 /65/70/75/etc.

A/B/C/K/V/T were the prefix letters.

A/B/C were all the same frame with the difference being the seal packing kit.

Early models had glands that tightened up on a leather and fabric seal. This was followed by rubber fabric.

In the C series they moved over to an O ring with a scraper or wiper ring held in by a circlip. The main ram seal remained the same with a cup seal made of a composite material.

The V series had a number of problems; the alloy block was very weak and the pump plunger used to break through the bottom of the block. The ball bearing valves were prone to braking through the valve seat and the main ram was sealed only by O rings with a ptfe backup split ring.

The T series replaced the V series and resolved these problems. The visible difference was the maximum height bar connected to the release / overload valve.

Brockhouse Harvey Frost bought out Epco keeping the T series alive. They stopped producing spares for the A/B/C series but had to reintroduce them for the C series as the UK MOD had so many of these jacks.

Attached is a page from a George Hatch brochure listing a number of Epco trolley jacks with their specifications. Kindly sent to me by PJ O-Furey: Epco Hydraulic Trolley Jacks .

Epco Model No. 65

Description:

The Epco 65 trolley jack has a 2 ton lift. It is stamped No. 65 SERIAL No. xxx MARK III CAPACITY 2032 KGS 4480 LBS EPCO LTD ENGLAND.

The final photo shows 2 hydraulic plugs. Inside the left one as viewed are 2 ball bearings of differing sizes. The first one to be placed in is the smaller of the 2. ie. the larger ball bearing is next to the plug. I mention this as I have received a number of communications from owners who, during jack servicing, have undone the plug then inverting the jack. The ball bearings then scatter to the far corners of the garage! If one or both get lost the lower ball is 3/16" diameter and the upper 3/8".
