George Radion in Australia has a database on Australian-made Jacks

This database is for vintage and classic Metallifacture vehicle jacks.  Many of the photos and comments have been gleaned from Ebay and other sites.  I would be pleased to add photos and comments from anyone who has information on these jacks.

Please note that this information is accurate to the best of my knowledge, but I make no claims about authority on this subject. Use your own discretion when evaluating the accuracy of the information.

The values are normally taken from auction sites world-wide, but exclude postage.

Request to vendors: Please feel free to use the information from these databases in your adverts. An acknowledgement of the source would be most welcome. However, please do not twist any of the information. Where I say along the lines: 'May be for car X' please make this clear in your advert. An altered statement saying: 'It is for car X' will create false facts and misinformation. If you know for certainty a jack's heritage please contact me so that I can amend the entry. Thank you.

Metallifacture - 3.8 E-Type Jaguar - Integrated Handle

Description

S1 3.8 and early 4.2 E-Type Jaguars after chassis No. 886246 were supplied with the cantilever jack made by METALLIFACTURE shown in the picture. Earlier E-Types were supplied with a Shelley LJ225 or Shelley LJ225 (ribbed) variant.

The Metallifacture jack has a square flat jacking pad and an integrated (non-detachable handle), unlike other similar jacks supplied with the Ford Cortina and Mini. It also has its feet mid body whereas the other version has its foot at the winder end. After 1967 Jaguar switched to the detachable handle variant to save costs.  Replacing faulty integrated ratchet handled jacks was proving costly for Jaguar, whereas with the later jacks only a faulty detachable handle was usually required to be replaced.

It is the rarest of the Metallifacture jacks supplied with E-Types. The other E-Type jacks are in the following 3 entries. Photo courtesy of Roger Payne in Australia.

I am informed by David Jones that the correct colour for the Metallifacture cantilever jacks is an 'RAF blue/grey' - code BS633.

One weakness with the jacks is the tendency for winder-end cross piece to bow under strain (last photo). Buyers beware and users should be extremely cautious about using these old jacks for wheel changes.

All E-Type Metallifacture jacks are described in YouTube.

Note: There is a similar jack listed under the Austin Princess a few entries down the page that has angled lifting arms. These were not supplied with the E-Type. Buyers beware.

Applicable Vehicles:

S1 3.8 and early 4.2 E-Type jaguars after chassis No. 886246.

Metallifacture - 4.2 E-Type Jaguar 2+2 - Integrated handle

Description

Same as the jack above, except it has a forked lifting pad to engage one of 4 jacking pegs.  The handle is integrated (non-detachable), making it one of the rarer E-Type jacks. After 1967 the jack was replaced by the one 2 entries below with the detachable handle, but retaining the forked pad.  Photo courtesy of David Jones.

Metallifacture - 4.2 E-Type Jaguar - Detachable handle

Description

Similar to the first jack above, except it has a detachable handle. Note the washer arrangement in the final photo. A number of jacks have been modified from other vehicles with the addition of the square jacking pad. The pad should be rivetted, not bolted as suggested in the first photo.

Metallifacture - S2 4.2 E-Type Jaguar

Metallifacture - S3 V12 E-Type Jaguar

Description

I have put this scissor jack here to keep all E-Type jacks together.

Later S2 4.2 E-Types had this scissor jack with the square locating pad (1st photo). The jack illustrated in the 2nd and 3rd photos had a different mounting pad and was supplied with the S3 V12 E-Type Jaguar. I am interested to know the chassis number/year for the changeover to this jack.

The version (2nd photo) used for early Series 3 E-Types (V12) was painted grey as for the Series 2 cars. Sometime in the early 72 model year, the colour was changed to metallic blue. Information courtesy of Andrew Kowalyk.

I am informed by David Jones that the correct colour for the Metallifacture cantilever jacks is an 'RAF blue/grey' - code BS633.

Applicable Vehicles:

S2 4.2 E-Type Jaguars (1st photo) and the S3 V12 E-Type Jaguar (2nd and 3rd photos).

E-Type summary courtesy of E-Type owner David Jones:

S1 3.8 = Shelley LJ225 or Shelley LJ225 (ribbed) jack up to Right Hand Drive Open Top Sports (OTS): to #850548. Left Hand Drive OTS: to #877518. Right hand Drive FHC: to #860660. Left Hand Drive FHC: to #886246.

Metallifacture - Ford Lotus Cortina Mk1

Description

This version is for the Lotus Cortina Mk1. Whilst it may appear similar to the E-Type version above other than the different jacking pad, closer inspection shows that the 2 rails that guide the lifting arm are set further apart than the E-Type version. This is to accommodate 2 wheels on the lifting shaft rather than the earlier plain shaft.

The first picture shows the jack with its associated tool kit and the third picture shows it displayed in the Lotus Cortina Mk1 boot/trunk. First 2 photos courtesy of David Cook.

One weakness with the jacks is the tendency for winder-end cross piece to bow under strain (last photo). Buyers beware and users should be extremely cautious about using these old jacks for wheel changes.

Note the washer arrangement in the second to last photo.

Applicable Vehicles:

Ford Lotus Cortina Mk1.

For later Cortina jacks please see the Ford database.

Jack Handle Type:

The ratchet handle is 11" long and has METALLIFACTURE to raise this side of jack and on the other side 'To lower this side to jack'. Please note that the wheel nut wrench shown in the pictures is incorrect. It should be in the shape of a woodworkers traditional brace.

Metallifacture Lotus Elan +2

Description

Some limited research suggests that this cantilever variant of the jack with the extra foot was supplied with the Lotus Elan +2 which had a different jacking system to the Elan. Close inspection also shows that the 2 rails that guide the lifting arm are set further apart than the E-Type version. This is to accommodate 2 wheels on the lifting shaft rather than the earlier plain shaft.

The photo is for a 1968 to 1974 Lotus Elan +2. Thank you to John Chamberlain for this information.

One weakness with the jacks is the tendency for winder-end cross piece to bow under strain (last photo). Buyers beware and users should be extremely cautious about using these old jacks for wheel changes.

Metallifacture Central Foot Cantilever - Austin/Morris?

Description

Very rare cantilever jack with the central foot and attached handle that I have only previously seen for the early E-Type Jaguar (first entry above). However, this version is in original red paint typical of Austin/Morris of the period and has the Mini style jacking point. This type of jack was superceded in 1967 with a detachable handled version. The traditional Mini cantilever jack did not have the mid point foot. See Mini below. Any information on vehicle type most welcome.

Metallifacture - Austin Princess

Description

This cantilever jack is similar to the Jaguar E-Type, having the mid-jack foot. The essential differences are the jacking point, (being the same as the Austin Allegro (further down the page in Scissor section)) and the heavy duty 'yoke' lifting arm which is an angle section instead of a rectangular bar used in the E-Type variant. The frequent high selling prices of this jack shows the confusion by both vendors and purchasers - Beware.

One weakness with the jacks is the tendency for winder-end cross piece to bow under strain (last photo). Buyers beware and users should be extremely cautious about using these old jacks for wheel changes.

Metallifacture Mini 1962 to 1968

Metallifacture Mini Moke

Description

This jack is similar to the Cortina jack above and marked with the patent No. 903079. It came in 2 jacking point versions. The first one from 1962 to 1964 was a solid L-angled bar (2nd photo). The 2nd from 1965 to 1968 had a hole to locate over a protruding stud head (3rd photo). Information courtesy of Dieter Deschacht.

My understanding is that the colour changed from red to grey in 1968 and that around that time the L-shaped jacking point was changed to a flat plate with the hole in the centre. The final 2 pictures show the original jack supplied with a 1968 Minivan.

The 4th photo was sent to me by Norman Nelson and shows the tool roll, jack, handle and wheel spanner from his Mini Countryman Estate.

The second version was also supplied as one of 2 options for the Mini Moke. The other was a scissor jack, likely supplied by Shelley. The final 2 photos but one are from the Mini Moke Service Manual. Information and diagrams provided by Jose Bartute.

One weakness with the jacks is the tendency for winder-end cross piece to bow under strain (last photo). Buyers beware and users should be extremely cautious about using these old jacks for wheel changes.

Note the washer arrangement in the second to last photo.

Applicable Vehicles:

Morris Mini Minor, Traveller, Van and Pick-up from 1962 to 1968.

Metallifacture Sidelift - MGB (Early?)

Description

When I first saw this jack I thought it was the version above but missing the capping over the winding mechanism. However, looking through the Haynes manual for the MGB it shows this jack in use on page 10 (4th photo). The jack owner tells me that it has no manufacturer markings so I have made the assumption it is Metallifacture since all other features appear similar to the one above. The jack is 19.5" high with a jacking spigot 10" long. Photos and information courtesy of Andrew Tyson.

George Radion sent me some additional photos, one of which shows a stamping RP14275 underneath the winder housing.
