George Radion in Australia has a database on Australian-made Jacks

This database is for vintage and classic Shelley vehicle jacks.  Many of the photos and comments have been gleaned from Ebay and other sites.  I would be pleased to add photos and comments from anyone who has information on these jacks.

Please note that this information is accurate to the best of my knowledge, but I make no claims about authority on this subject. Use your own discretion when evaluating the accuracy of the information.

It seems that Shelley changed their product marking during the 1950s from 'DL' to 'LJ'.  For some jacks this occurred in 1951/1952, but with others such as the 12DL the changeover to the LJ22 was as late as 1957.

All Shelley jacks are now old.  I would recommend that they are now used only for display purposes.  If one is used for lifting a vehicle, the operator should never put them self underneath the supported area without additional load bearing equipment in place, such as block of wood. Never use bricks for this purpose. See also jack instructions on the linked wrapping label. Instructions.

The values are normally taken from auction sites world-wide, but exclude postage.

See here for how a jack in average condition can easily be brought back to life. Jack refurbishment

I have begun adding detailed information on the various types of Shelley jack handles and which jacks had which type.  If you have any photos and information please contact me.

Request to vendors: Please feel free to use the information from these databases in your adverts. An acknowledgement of the source would be most welcome. However, please do not twist any of the information. Where I say along the lines: 'May be for car X' please make this clear in your advert. An altered statement saying: 'It is for car X' will create false facts and misinformation. If you know for certainty a jack's heritage please contact me so that I can amend the entry. Thank you.

R T Shelley - makers of automotive accessories

1908 - Private company.

1908 - The Norton Company was bought by Bob Shelley, who owned R.T. Shelley, an automotive manufacturing business. Most people credit James Norton with the success of the company but actually, without Bob Shelley, there would not have been a Norton motorcycle company at all. R.T. Shelley was already a supplier to Norton so the transfer of power was made a little easier. However, the relationship between Bob Shelley and James Norton was not good.

1913 - James Norton was not a business man; his strengths lay elsewhere. His company ran into trouble and was forced into liquidation.

1916 - The Shelley company moved to Phillips Street, Aston. Bill Mansell moved from R.T. Shelley to take over Norton Management and under his guidance the company was reformed in 1926; the new company being Norton Motors (1926) Ltd.

1953 - AMC acquired Norton including its wholly-owned subsidiary R.T. Shelley.

1961 - Shelley was known as general engineers, manufacturing tools and components for automobiles, aero engines; also manufacturing lifting jacks for private and commercial vehicles. 400 employees.

1969 - Tangye, another jack maker bought out Shelley and the company renamed Tangye-Shelley, Gough Road, Greet, Birmingham, B11 2NG.

Post 1969 - All Shelley productions records lost/destroyed.

Shelley 6 INCH DL - MG

Description

The jack is a double screw lift. It is 5 1/2" closed and 11 1/2" fully extended. It has 6 INCH & DL cast on one side and SHELLEY cast into the other side of the main body. It has a saddle jacking point and a 3/4" cross section jack handle slot. The jack was painted black. First 4 photos courtesy of Terry Speedy.

The 5th and 6th photos were sent to me by Matt Higginbotham and show that the jack was also supplied in red, but for which vehicles? The hole in the winder was drilled by a previous owner so that it could be used with a tommy bar. The last photo shows the double screw extension.

Applicable Vehicles:

MGTC, MGTD and some early MGTF 1250s.  Later MGTFs used the King Dick B1077.  Some early MGTCs may have had the Shelley A6.

Jack Handle Type:

As shown in 3rd picture.  The handle shaft is in 2 sections. The piece that slots into the jack is 19 1/4" long.  The square piece that fits into the jack is 3/4" in cross section, not including the 1/4" ball bearing on the one side.  The other handle is 18".  When hooked together, the overall length is 36".  The hole in the outer end of the handle is 3/8" in diameter. The metal handle is 12" long. Photo and information courtesy of Terry Speedy.

Shelley 6 1/2 INCH EX

Description

The jack is 7 1/2" closed and 15 1/2" fully extended. It is unusual in that the inner extension is a peg in the hole, rather than the conventional screw extension. My photos.

Applicable Vehicles:

This jack was owned by my late Father-in-Law. In the 1930s he owned a number of Morgan trikes, BSA Scout and a Singer Le Mans. It could have come from any of these cars. Any information most welcome.

Jack Handle Type:

See second photo. Two section 1/2" square metal bar. Handle section 18.5" long; end section 19.5" long. Connecting square tube appears to be made from 2 'L' section strips welded together. 10" handle slightly tapered from 1 1/16" to 1"

Year Dates Noted:

No date shown on the casting.

Value:

Priceless to me.

Shelley High Lift

Description

This jack is similar to the one immediately above in that it has the pegged inner extension. It is cast SHELLEY on one side and HIGH LIFT on the other. In addition, along one side of the base it is cast FOR LOW PRESSURE TYRES. Low pressure (balloon) tyres were produced in quantity soon after WW1. It is likely this jack was produced in the early 1920s.  The jack is 7.5" tall closed and 15.5" extended. The handle crank takes a 1/2" square bar. Photos and details courtesy of Martin Blaylock.

The pegged shaft is threaded for 3/4" at the bottom, allowing it to be unscrewed. It is likely that the jack was supplied with a similar but longer pegged shaft for a vehicle with a higher axle.

Applicable Vehicles:

Not known.

Jack Handle Type:

Not known but likely to be a 2 piece shaft with a wooden handle.

Year Dates Noted:

No date shown on the casting.

Shelley A6

Description:

The Shelley A6 double-lift jack is shown complete with its original folding hook handle and wooden shaft. It was supplied with many MG MMM prewar cars listed below. It is cast SHELLEY vertically on the main body and A6 on the other.

The third photo (courtesy of Ebay Supersnails) shows a refurbished  A6 in red (not a standard colour). It is significantly different, having the winding mechanism 90 degrees to the base. It has an 'L-shaped' jacking point. It is cast SHELLEY horizontally on the base; the other side is cast A6. The MG TA and MG TB used this jack to fit in its allocated slot in the tool box in order to clear 2 rubber tool trays. The final photo is taken from the MG TA driver's instruction book.

An unusual feature of the jack with the right angle winder is that the yoke appears to turn independently of the top (inner) screw, having some sort of spiral bar arrangement running through the screw assembly. See 4th photo. I do not know if the in-line winder jack also had this bar.

Applicable Vehicles:

MGVA. See attached file (pdf) showing the full MGVA toolkit.

Information received (March 2017) states that the jack with the 'in-line' version was supplied with many pre-war MMM MGs, namely the L, K, P, N and VA.

The version with the winder at right angles to the base was supplied with the later MG TA, TB; also possible on some very late MG PBs and NBs including 4-seaters.

Some early MG TCs may also have been supplied with the A6 jack. In Mike Sherrell's book 'TCs Forever!' he states on page 253: "The Shelley jack began life with a turned wooden handle and hinged, folding, drive extension (Early TCs - pre war leftover) and end up with a square drive in two lengths, with a separate steel, tommy-bar handle." - Shelley 6 Inch. Indeed my MGTC Instruction Manual dated 1950 shows the Shelley A6 jack (2nd from last photo).

Jack Handle Type:

As shown in the 3rd and 4th photos.  It is 27" long of two equal sections and 0.5" diameter bar. The handle is 10.75" long. Its diameters are 1 1/8", 15/16" and 13/16". See 7" jack for more handle photos.

Tony Press from Melbourne, Australia reports that he is sure that the 1928 and 1929 (and possibly through to 1930) Austin Seven tool kit included a 7" Bantam Jack in black. However, the Austin 7 parts list from 1925 up to 1936 show a jack with a 'saddle' head and hour glass base (last photo). Both of his have a round head as shown in all the attached photos. See Shelley 10DL and Lake & Elliot Midas JRS421 for other Austin 7 jacks.

Ebay vendor (Oct 2016), a specialist in Austin 7s, reports that owners up to 1935 were offered either this jack or the Lake & Elliot Midas 7 Junior.

Possibly also supplied with the Austin 10/4.

MGJ2

Jack Handle Type:

36" long with steel bar handle. Square section, 2 piece main shaft with a fixed collar.

Tony Press also reports that for the Austin 7 the jack handles are a single square section with wooden handle through a loop end.

MG J2 had the folding handle with the hook connection (see entry below).

Shelley 7DL

Description:

The jack measures 6.5" retracted and 14.5" extended. It has either an L-shaped or saddle jacking point (see next entry), rectangular base with rounded corners and a 1/2" square handle socket.

The L-shaped version was re-badged in the early 1950s (probably around 1952) as the LJ21 and then supplied with the Austin Healey 100-4 BN2, the 100/6 and early 3000s.

Applicable Vehicles:

See next entry (saddle jacking plate) for the Morris 8.

The jack with the L-shaped jacking point may have been supplied with the AC Ace and Aceca (unconfirmed) but was definitely never part of the AC Cobra toolkit (see LJ22).  Indeed, the L-shape jacking point will not fit the AC Cobra.

An Austin Healey document by Roger Moment, dated November-December 2011 states that 2 Austin Healey BN6s built in 1958 were found with the 7DL. The jack was replaced by the LJ21 and may have been interchangeable with it during the transition period depending on availability in the parts bin on the production lines.  The 7DL may also have been supplied with early 3000 Mk1 models. See entries for the Shelley 6 INCH DL, 12DL, LJ21, LJ23, LJ225, LJ225 mod, King Dick B1077 and B1881 for other Healey Jacks.

Austin A55 Cambridge.

The jack is also claimed by an Ebay seller to be an original item on early Land Rover Series 1, Series 2 and Willys Jeeps.

The jack may also have been supplied with the BMW Isetta for the UK market - awaiting clarification.
